Area school districts have announced closures ahead of the severe weather anticipated Tuesday evening and throughout Thursday. According to the National Weather Service, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 30 below are expected starting Tuesday. Headed into Tuesday evening and throughout Thursday morning, wind chills are expected to be as low as 50 to 55 below zero. 


  • District 230 schools and facilities will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, and will remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday,  Jan. 31. There will be no school, activities, sports, rentals or any other use of the buildings during this timeframe.
  • Kirby School District 140 announced that all schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Jan. 31. Before and after school activities, including the Ivy League Program, are also canceled for Wednesday and Thursday. The make up days for these closures will be June 7 and June 10.
  • District 146 in Tinley Park will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Jan. 31. After-school activities for today, Wednesday, and Thursday have also been cancelled.
  • District 228 has cancelled school tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 30.
