Grissom Middle School coach Michael Hawrysio, who played boys basketball at the school in the early 2000s, was seemingly in good position to become the first eighth grade team to win the South West Interscholastic Conference tournament title in back-to-back years since Palos South did it in 2012 and 2013.

The Patriots picked up the top seed and rolled to the finals. But sixth-seeded Century had other plans and knocked off the Patriots, 48-36 on Saturday, March 9, at Liberty Junior High in Burbank.
